FAQ

What is AION 2?
AION 2 is NCSOFT's open-world MMORPG sequel to AION, built on Unreal Engine 5 and launching globally on PC on October 5, 2026 through Steam and the NCSOFT PURPLE launcher. It is free to play, and its stated design core is flight as a combat system rather than a travel option.
What is AION 2's combat like — action combat or tab-targeting?
Officially, both. NCSOFT describes combat that melds precision, timing and positioning with traditional tab-targeting, and separately calls flight a combat system rather than a traversal feature. Which tradition dominates the moment-to-moment feel has not been published, and the global build has not been playable, so treat combat feel as untested until launch.
How big is the AION 2 world?
NCSOFT describes a world 36 times larger than the original AION, built on Unreal Engine 5, with verticality named as the design axis for every region, battlefield and encounter. The 36x figure is a scale claim, not a statement about how much content fills that space.
Can you fly and fight in the air in AION 2?
Yes. Flight is confirmed and officially framed as a combat system, not a travel mechanic. The Steam page calls AION 2 the only MMORPG built for aerial combat and says flight is how a Daeva fights, explores and imposes their will on the world. Whether flight is allowed inside instanced dungeons is not announced.
How many players can group together in AION 2?
Two official wordings disagree. The June 5, 2026 press release describes solo and four-player dungeons to eight-player raids, while the official global teaser site labels all four named dungeons for up to five players. Both are NCSOFT, so plan a five-slot group and treat raids as eight-player until the live client settles it.
Is AION 2 free to play, and is it on console?
It is free to play with in-app purchases, and it is PC only. Steam flags the client as windows true, mac false and linux false, so there is no announced console, Mac or Linux version. It runs through Steam and the NCSOFT PURPLE launcher.
What is the AION 2 level cap?
Not announced. The Launch Scale Test on September 17-18, 2026 capped characters at level 37, but that was a test ceiling for an infrastructure test whose progress was wiped afterwards. It is not the live global cap, and NCSOFT has not published what that will be.
What is the Abyss in AION 2?
The Abyss is the series signature PvPvE region, confirmed for the global service, where the Elyos of the Light and the Asmodians of the Dark contest territory in the same space players run PvE content. Its layout, objectives and rewards are not announced.

AION 2 is NCSOFT’s free-to-play MMORPG sequel to AION, built on Unreal Engine 5 and launching globally on PC on October 5, 2026 through Steam and the NCSOFT PURPLE launcher. Its pitch is narrow and specific: flight is a combat system rather than a travel option, inside a world NCSOFT describes as 36 times larger than the original.

Quick facts Official position
What it is Open-world MMORPG, direct sequel to AION
Developer and publisher NCSOFT (NC)
Engine Unreal Engine 5
World scale “a world 36 times larger than the original AION”
Self-description “the only MMORPG built for aerial combat”
Release October 5, 2026, free to play
Early access September 30, 2026, Founder’s Pack owners
Platforms PC only — Windows, via Steam and PURPLE
Factions Elyos (Light) and Asmodians (Dark)
Classes Eight, available to both factions and either gender
Player identity Daeva — a winged, ascended being

Two cautions before the detail. The retail global build has never been playable: the September 17-18 Launch Scale Test was the closest anyone outside Asia has come, and it wiped all progress at the end. NCSOFT’s copy is also precise about systems and silent about numbers, so this page quotes the systems and leaves the numbers unannounced.

What is AION 2’s combat actually like?

NCSOFT describes flight as a combat system, not a traversal feature, and the fight itself as a mix of precision, timing and positioning layered onto traditional tab-targeting. Chain skills, class customisation and escalating encounters are all officially billed. How any of that feels under your hands is genuinely unknown until the global build is live.

The official wording is worth reading as published, because almost everything else written about AION 2 combat is an interpretation of these three passages.

AION 2’s core experience is built around something few MMOs attempt at scale: full freedom of flight as a combat system, not as a traversal feature. Players don’t just move through Atreia, they fight, fall, and rise through it. Its fast-paced combat melds precision, timing, and positioning with traditional tab-targeting into a dynamic, modern combat experience. — NCSOFT press release, June 5, 2026

Verticality is in the DNA of AION 2, and rewards players who can think, and fight, in 3 dimensions. […] Every region, every battlefield, every encounter was designed with verticality as its axis. As a Daeva, flight is not a travel mechanic, it is how you fight, how you explore, and how you impose your will on the world. — Steam store page, AppID 3393110

Precision, timing, and positioning shape every battle. Chain skills seamlessly, customize your class to fit your playstyle, and adapt as encounters escalate. Every fight is a decision, not a rotation. — Steam store page, AppID 3393110

Those passages support four claims, three of which you can plan around.

Official claim What it means in practice Status
Flight is a combat system Expect real fighting in the air, not just travel between fights Confirmed
Traditional tab-targeting is retained Target selection is not a free-aim action game Confirmed
Positioning and timing shape fights Altitude and approach angle should change outcomes Confirmed
“Every fight is a decision, not a rotation” Design intent, not a measurable fact Marketing claim

The honest gap sits between the second and third rows. “Precision, timing, and positioning” reads like action combat; “traditional tab-targeting” is the opposite tradition, and NCSOFT uses both phrases in a single sentence. Nothing published resolves which one dominates the moment-to-moment feel — camera handling, target locking, animation cancelling, or how much of a typical fight happens airborne rather than grounded.

That is the first thing worth testing yourself once the client is live: copy cannot settle it, and neither can Korean or Taiwanese footage, which runs a separate build with its own balance. Combat feel is the largest unverified claim on this page.

How big is AION 2?

Big by NCSOFT’s own numbers: Unreal Engine 5, and a world the Steam page calls 36 times larger than the original AION. Verticality is stated as the design axis rather than a feature, which matters more than the multiplier itself for how the map actually plays.

Built on Unreal Engine 5 across a world 36 times larger than the original AION, this is the only MMORPG built for aerial combat. — Steam store page, AppID 3393110

Technical fact Official position
Engine Unreal Engine 5
World scale 36 times the original AION
Design axis Verticality — “every region, every battlefield, every encounter”
Platforms PC only: Steam flags windows true, mac false, linux false
Launchers Steam and the NCSOFT PURPLE launcher
Price model Free to play, with in-app purchases
Minimum spec Ryzen 5 2600 or i5-10500, 8 GB RAM, GTX 1050 Ti, 100 GB
Recommended spec Ryzen 7 3700X or i7-11700, 16 GB RAM, RTX 2070
Languages Eight, including English, Japanese and Korean; no Chinese
Store categories MMO, PvP, Online PvP, Co-op, In-App Purchases, Family Sharing

The 36x figure is a scale claim, not a content claim: a larger world can mean more to explore, more zones to level through, or simply more distance between the interesting parts, and nothing published says which. What the verticality lines establish is that the map is meant to be used in three dimensions, not flown over. The PC system requirements page reproduces both spec tiers in full, including NCSOFT’s note that full HD runs on the Low preset even on the recommended build.

What content is there to do?

Confirmed systems cover PvE, PvP and the economy. NCSOFT’s own PvE line runs from solo and four-player dungeons to eight-player raids, while the official teaser site labels all four named dungeons for up to five players. Structured PvP runs from 1v1 and 4v4 arenas to cross-server RvR, alongside the Abyss and rifts.

Content Scale Official detail published
Solo dungeon Alone Exists. Names, count and levels: not announced
Party dungeon 4-5 players Four named: Krao Cave, Urugugu Canyon, Fire Temple, Draupnir
Raid 8 players Confirmed to exist. Roster and schedule: not announced
Abyss Open contested region Persistent PvPvE territory fought over by both factions
Rifts Varies Cross-region invasion paths, a series tradition
PvP arenas 1v1, 4v4, cross-server RvR Confirmed in NC’s global copy. An 8v8 format is reported in coverage of NC’s own reveal but does not appear in NC’s published global materials. Maps and rewards: not announced
Crafting Confirmed to exist. Global details: not announced
Auction house Confirmed to exist. Global details: not announced
Guilds Confirmed to exist. Global details: not announced
Player trading Confirmed to exist. Rules: not announced
Pets Mount transformation and auto-looting, per official copy

The two official party-size wordings do not match

Both of these are NCSOFT, and they are printed separately rather than averaged into one number, because nobody outside the studio can yet say which describes the live global build.

Official source Party-size wording
NCSOFT press release, June 5, 2026 “a deep set of PvE content ranging from solo and four-player dungeons to eight-player raids
NCSOFT global teaser site [Dungeon for up to 5 players]”, printed on all four named dungeons

The practical read: plan a five-slot group and treat the raid tier as eight-player until the client shows otherwise. The dungeon list page quotes the four official dungeon descriptions verbatim and marks what the copy does not answer.

The Abyss, rifts, PvP and pets

The Abyss is the series signature PvPvE region, confirmed for the global service, where both factions contest territory in the same space where players run PvE content. Rifts are the other series tradition: a temporary passage from your territory into enemy territory, which turns a familiar farming map into a contested one. Neither has a published schedule, layout or reward structure.

Pets are the one system with a quotable official description beyond its name:

Collect lovable companions that follow you around and transforms into rideable mounts and can provide benefits such as auto-looting. — NCSOFT global teaser site

Whether that applies inside instanced content, where mounts are normally restricted, is not stated. The four dungeons above are also the only instanced content with official names — any dungeon schedule you read before launch is inference, not announcement.

What do you actually do as a player?

You create a Daeva, a winged ascended being, choose one of two factions, choose one of eight classes, and level through a world where the other faction is a permanent threat. Elyos (Light) and Asmodians (Dark) are the playable sides, and every class is open to both, at either gender.

Step What is confirmed What is not
Create a character Daeva identity; eight classes, both factions, either gender Customisation options in the global build
Pick a faction Elyos or Asmodians; official framing is “Tale of Two Worlds” Faction population per world
Pick a class Role and weapon for each class are published Any performance ranking
Level up Flight, gliding and open-world PvE in both faction territories The global level cap
Reach endgame Solo, party and raid PvE; Abyss; rifts; three arena formats Release order, entry gates, rewards

NCSOFT sells the campaign with a single heading — “Tale of Two Worlds — Experience the tale of the Elyos and Asmodians.” — so faction choice is narrative as much as mechanical. KR/TW coverage describes two playable regions, South Atreia for the Elyos and North Atreia for the Asmodians; that split is a Korean and Taiwanese service observation rather than a global confirmation, and the global vs KR/TW comparison tracks the version gap. Balaur appear in official copy as a third power in the world, and nothing official says they are selectable.

One number to ignore: the Launch Scale Test capped characters at level 37. That was a test ceiling, not the live cap, and progress was wiped afterwards — useful for testing how a class feels, useless for planning a levelling route. The playtest schedule page records what those two six-hour windows allowed.

How does AION 2 compare to the original AION?

Four comparisons are safe because NCSOFT states them: the engine is now Unreal Engine 5, the world is 36 times larger, flight has moved from a travel mechanic to a combat system, and combat still uses traditional tab-targeting. Anything beyond those four points is not supported by official material.

Element Original AION AION 2 — official position
Engine Not Unreal Engine 5 Unreal Engine 5
World size Baseline for the comparison “36 times larger than the original AION”
Flight Travel and limited aerial combat “not a travel mechanic, it is how you fight”
Target model Tab-targeting “traditional tab-targeting”, retained
Combat design intent “Every fight is a decision, not a rotation”

Deliberately missing from that table is everything the comparison usually invites: class counts across both games, balance changes, PvP lineage and progression pacing. None of it can be checked before the global build exists. The same discipline applies to the class tier list, which explains why no credible global ranking exists yet.

What we still do not know before October 5

A short list, and every item on it is a real gap rather than a tease. The global level cap, the dungeon roster and release order, loot tables, and the global details of crafting, the auction house and guilds are all unpublished. So is combat feel.

Unknown What we know instead Where the answer will come from
Global level cap 37 was a Launch Scale Test ceiling only The live client
Full dungeon and raid list Four named dungeons, no total and no order Patch notes and the client
Loot tables and drop behaviour Nothing published at any level Recorded runs after launch
Crafting, auction house, guild detail Systems exist; global specifics absent In-game documentation
Combat feel: action or tab-target hybrid NCSOFT uses both vocabularies Hands-on testing from September 30
PvP seasons, ranks and rewards 1v1, 4v4 and cross-server RvR exist Post-launch announcements
Abyss and rift schedules Systems exist Observed in the live world
Post-launch content roadmap Not announced NCSOFT announcements

None of those rows gets filled with numbers borrowed from the Korean or Taiwanese service, or with datamined guesses. Each one gets a tested answer after October 5, 2026, stamped with the date it was checked — with the first genuine hands-on data arriving from Advance Access on September 30 for Founder’s Pack owners.

Where to go next

Start with the pages that answer day-one decisions, then the ones that go deeper. Class choice, dungeon and raid structure, PvP and the launch schedule each have their own page, and each one marks what NCSOFT has not published. Nothing here needs a Founder’s Pack to read.

Sources and verification

Everything here comes from NCSOFT’s own material: the Steam store copy for AppID 3393110, the June 5, 2026 global press release, and the official global teaser site. Quotations are reproduced word for word and attributed to their source. Nothing is inferred from Korean or Taiwanese footage except where it is labelled as such.

  • Steam store page, AppID 3393110 — Unreal Engine 5, the world 36 times larger than the original AION, the only MMORPG built for aerial combat line, the verticality passages, the Daeva flight line, Every fight is a decision, not a rotation, the free-to-play and in-app purchase flags, the Windows-only platform flags, the system requirement tiers and the store categories (checked September 22, 2026)
  • NCSOFT press release, June 5, 2026 — full freedom of flight as a combat system, not as a traversal feature; the precision, timing, and positioning with traditional tab-targeting wording; and the solo and four-player dungeons to eight-player raids PvE line, quoted separately because it does not match the teaser site party size
  • NCSOFT official global teaser site, aion2.ncsoft.jp/en — the four named Expedition and BOSS dungeons with their verbatim descriptions, the Dungeon for up to 5 players line, the Tale of Two Worlds heading, the Balaur reference, and the pet description covering rideable mounts and auto-looting (checked September 22, 2026)
  • NCSOFT Launch Scale Test announcements, September 17-19, 2026 — the level 37 test ceiling and the end-of-test progress wipe, both labelled as test-period observations rather than live values
  • Korean and Taiwanese service coverage — the South Atreia and North Atreia region split, labelled as a KR/TW observation throughout
  • NCSOFT official global site, aion2.plaync.com — launch date, platform and content system confirmation

Evidence level: Official / Global for the engine, the 36-times world scale, the aerial combat framing, the two factions and eight classes, the confirmed content systems and the platform facts, all read from NCSOFT sources on September 22, 2026. Official but conflicting for party size, where the teaser site says up to 5 players and the June 5, 2026 press release says solo and four-player dungeons to eight-player raids; both are quoted and neither is merged. Labelled as test-period observation: the level 37 cap. Labelled as KR/TW: the South and North Atreia region split. No damage figure, drop rate, tier ranking, frame rate or completion time appears on this page, because the global build is not playable before October 5, 2026 and no such value has been published.
