Is AION 2 Free to Play? AION 2 Pay to Win Explained

AION 2 is free on Steam with in-app purchases. NC's $15/month membership gates the Market and the Kina-Quna exchange, so the pay to win verdict is layered.

Is AION 2 Free to Play? AION 2 Pay to Win Explained

FAQ

Is AION 2 free to play?
Yes. The Steam store page for AppID 3393110 lists AION 2 as Free To Play with an In-App Purchases disclosure, and there is no box price on either Steam or the PURPLE launcher. The global service opens to everyone on October 5, 2026. A Founder's Pack buys five days of early access plus cosmetics and a 30-day membership - it does not buy the game.
Is AION 2 pay to win?
There is no single verified answer yet, and anyone giving one is predicting. NC states cash shop sales do not affect gear progression or long-term power, and the announced global shop is cosmetics and consumables. The open question is structural: a membership that unlocks the Market and the Kina-Quna exchange changes what real money can become, and if the best gear is tradeable, currency can buy it. That mechanism was observable in the Korea and Taiwan service, not in a global build nobody has played.
How much is the AION 2 membership?
NC's July 8, 2026 business model notice set an optional monthly subscription that Massively Overpowered reported at $15 a month. The notice describes it as unlocking the Market, the Kina-Quna exchange, a subscriber-only cash shop tier and additional gameplay benefits. NC has not published a full regional price list in English, so treat $15 as the reported monthly rate and confirm the charge in your own store.
Does the AION 2 Founder's Pack make you pay to win?
No. The three packs are cumulative cosmetic bundles with a five-day head start and a 30-day membership, and no tier lists a stat-bearing item. Every listed item below the access window and membership carries a Bound label, so nothing in them is tradeable. See the Founder's Pack comparison for the full item list.
What is Quna in AION 2?
Quna is the premium currency bought with real money and spent in the cash shop and on battle pass premium tracks. Kina is the currency earned through play and spent on the player Market. The Kina-Quna exchange converts between them, which is why the system sits at the centre of the pay to win argument: it is a first-party bridge from real money into the earned economy.
Was the cash shop available during the AION 2 Launch Scale Test?
No. NC's own test notes say no purchases of any kind were available: the shop, Quna, passes, memberships and all payment portals were turned off, and the Market, the Quna exchange and player-to-player trading were disabled too. That disable list is the clearest public picture of what the live service sells.
When can I check the AION 2 shop for myself?
October 5, 2026, when the global service opens, or September 30 for Founder's Pack owners in Advance Access. The systems that decide the pay to win question - the exchange rate, what drops, whether top gear is tradeable - are only observable on the live global build.

AION 2 arrives on October 5, 2026 as a free download with a cash shop attached. The game is free, the payment model is announced, and the contested part cannot be settled until the global build is playable.

Is AION 2 free to play?

Yes. The game itself is free. NC lists AION 2 on Steam as Free To Play with an In-App Purchases disclosure, there is no box price on Steam or the PURPLE launcher, and October 5, 2026 opens to everyone. A Founder’s Pack buys five early days, cosmetics and a 30-day membership - not the game.

Steam settles that: the pack is a DLC whose base game is the free client, and the Founder’s Pack comparison itemises every tier.

What has NC announced about paying for AION 2?

A cash shop, an optional membership, per-character battle passes and two currencies. NC published a business model notice on its AION 2 board on July 8, 2026, and Massively Overpowered reported it the same day as an optional $15 monthly subscription, a cosmetics-and-consumables shop, Daeva passes with free and paid tracks, and the Kina and Quna currencies.

Question What is actually known
Is the game free? Yes - Steam lists it Free To Play (official)
In-app purchases? Yes - a Steam feature (official)
Subscription? Optional, reported at $15/month from NC’s July 8, 2026 notice
Does membership gate the Market? Per that notice, yes - Market and Kina-Quna exchange access are membership benefits
Two currencies? Yes - Kina is earned, Quna is bought, an exchange converts between them
Battle pass? Yes - Daeva passes, per character, free track plus a Quna-bought premium track
What does the shop sell? Cosmetics and consumables - NC states sales do not affect gear progression or long-term power
Global battle pass price and cadence Not announced in official English material
Kina to Quna exchange rate Not published
Regional prices beyond the reported USD figure Not published
Can a free player buy from the Market? Not announced

The bottom four rows are the honest state of things: the systems are announced, the numbers that would price them are not, and the exchange rate decides what real money is worth.

What the Launch Scale Test told us about monetization

The test switched the whole payment layer off, and that disable list is a map of what the live service sells. NC’s notes for the September 17-18 test state that no purchases of any kind would be available: shop, Quna, passes, memberships and payment portals off, with the Market, Quna exchange and player trading disabled too.

A stress test turns off what it does not need to test; it does not remove systems from the product. The playtest schedule page confirms the test ran on the same global build everyone joins in October.

Switched off for the test What it implies for the live global service
Cash shop and all payment portals A real-money store exists at launch
Quna A premium currency exists, separate from earned Kina
Passes A seasonal battle pass exists
Memberships A paid membership tier exists
The Market An auction-house style player market exists
The Kina-Quna exchange A bridge from real money into the earned currency exists
Player-to-player trading Direct trading exists, and can be disabled independently of the Market
Founder’s Pack items Pack contents are delivered items, not account access
The closet Appearance is its own system, and therefore a natural storefront

The asymmetry is the point: NC did not say these systems would not exist, it said they would be off for twelve hours of load testing. A feature disabled for a beta rather than denied is on the roadmap.

What the Korea and Taiwan service does

The Asian service has run since November 19, 2025, and its monetization history is the main reason the pay to win question follows this game at all. Everything below is reported by media and community coverage of that service, not an announced global plan - global is a separate build, as the global vs KR/TW page sets out.

Report Detail Scope and status
Monthly membership Reported at roughly $15 a month, with Market (auction house) access tied to the subscription Korea/Taiwan service, media reported
Kina to Quna exchange An official player-to-player conversion between earned and premium currency, widely criticised as an officially sanctioned real-money trading channel Korea/Taiwan service, media and community reported
Season 2 battle passes Reported at about $105 in total for the three premium tracks when Season 2 opened in January 2026, revised downward after backlash; community coverage puts the revised total near $55 Korea/Taiwan service, media reported; the revised figure is community-reported and we could not check it against an official Korean notice
Launch-day cash shop Reported to have bundled combat power items into premium currency packages despite a prior statement that they would not be sold, with NC’s stock reported to fall about 15% that day and the packages pulled after an emergency broadcast Korea/Taiwan service, media reported

Two readings are defensible. Either the Asian service is the company’s revealed preference and the West gets a version of it, or it is a mistake NC has publicly corrected - the reported apology, the pulled packages and the later subscription consolidation all point that way. Either way, the reported fixes came after backlash, not before it.

Is AION 2 pay to win?

Not in one answer. Split it into three layers, because they carry different evidence. The cash shop is cosmetic on NC’s own account; the membership and the currency exchange change what money can buy; and direct stat sales have no place in the announced global plan but do have precedent in the Asian service.

Each layer is checked separately below.

The cash shop: no evidence of direct power. NC’s stated position is that cash shop sales do not affect gear progression or long-term power, and the announced global shop is cosmetics and consumables. If the shop honours that line, the item-level answer is no, and the Founder’s Packs are consistent with it - no tier lists anything with stats.

The membership and the economy: this is the real question. A membership that unlocks the Market and the Kina-Quna exchange adds no stat points, but it changes what money can become. If gear obtained in game is tradeable, then buying Quna, converting it to Kina and buying that gear is a path from a card payment to a geared character. That is not a shop selling a weapon with stats, and it is not nothing. Its size depends on the exchange rate and on what is tradeable - two things nobody can measure yet.

Direct stat sales: not in the global plan, but there is precedent. The reported Korea/Taiwan launch controversy was exactly this: enhancement items inside premium currency packages. Nothing in the announced global material crosses that line.

So both confident answers are predictions: nobody outside Korea and Taiwan has played the retail global build, and the deciding evidence arrives after October 5. A reasonable assumption: the shop stays cosmetic and the economy layer is pay-for-efficiency. Verify both in the first week.

How to tell if it becomes pay to win after launch

Watch six signals, not the review score. Pay to win here is a structure rather than an announcement, and each signal below is checkable in the client within a day of launch, without waiting for anyone else’s verdict. Screenshot what you find, because the first patch is where the comparison starts.

Signal Where to check Why it matters
Can a free account list items on the Market, or only browse? Market tab on a no-membership account Sell access is where money meets the economy
Does anything in the shop carry stats or enhancement chance? Cash shop item tooltips The line the reported Korean launch crossed
Does the paid pass track contain power or upgrade materials? Pass track preview A pass paying out materials is a stat sale in instalments
Who sets the Kina to Quna rate, and does NC cap it? Exchange tab, then patch notes A controlled rate is controlled pricing power
Is the best gear tradeable on the Market? Item tooltips on endgame gear Tradeable best-in-slot turns currency into power
Do membership perks touch combat throughput? Membership benefit list in the client Energy and entry limits are efficiency, not appearance

Two habits make those signals usable. Record the state on day one - screenshot the shop, the pass and the exchange page - so the first patch has something to compare against. Then read patch notes for what changes in the shop, not just the classes: monetization changes in a line item, not an announcement.

The release date and launch time page tracks when the client goes live, the Advance Access guide covers who gets in on September 30, the codes page collects free rewards that need no purchase, and the server status page is where patch-day timing shows up first.

Evidence level: Official for the free-to-play status, the in-app purchase disclosure and the Launch Scale Test disabled list; media reported for the July 8, 2026 business model notice and every Korea/Taiwan line; not announced for the battle pass price, the exchange rate, regional pricing and the free-player Market rules. Every Korea/Taiwan entry is scoped to that service and labelled as reported rather than stated as fact, and no gameplay numbers - drop rates, damage, tier order - appear here, because the retail global build has not been playable before October 5, 2026.
